Ingesting Hair – 1.6 kg of it!

Posted on Updated on

Hair, is often a defining symbol of a person’s identity. Many stories have be written with hairs playing a central role; Rapunzel being the most prominent of them.

But this same hair at times can prove fatal, as happens in rare cases where a person, starts ingesting hair.

“Such instances happen rarely, but the case is extremely strange” says a leading doctor. It becomes all the more so when the quantity of hair removed from the stomach weighs more than 1 kg.

This is the story of a young lady, residing in Mumbai from whose stomach a hairball measuring 21 cm by 21 cm, weighing 1.6 kg was removed by a team of determined surgeons.

Doctors say that most cases of trichobezoars are the result of psychological problems, which could include depression, anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder.

Therefore, as the father of the victim put it, “A gentle reprimand once a while” is not necessarily enough to prevent a shock post operation

It is best that such habits be stopped at the earliest – to prevent non-necessary visits to the hospital.

It is so sad that the younger & younger kids are now feeling depressed. Of course, science and medicine are helping but today on the day of Diwali pray such things would never happen in future.

No doubt, excessive pressure to outperform others from a very young age have resulted in some of the young ones going into depressions. Eating hair & getting operated under the lights with masses of hair removed from the stomach; is one thing that should be avoided at all costs.
As far as tackling depression is concerned, parents should identify the signs at the earliest and take corrective actions.
Let’s collectively pray that this Diwali onwards, such cases become all the more rare.
